Everything you need to know about Confidant.

Privacy & Security

How do I know my client data stays on my computer?
Yes, completely. Confidant runs entirely on your computer — no audio, transcripts, or notes are ever sent to any server. Everything stays on your device, encrypted at rest. We have no access to your data because it never reaches us. If you want to verify this yourself, you can use a free network tool like Charles Proxy to watch exactly what leaves your computer while Confidant is running. Here's what you'll see.
Can Confidant ever access my recordings or notes?
No. Because everything runs locally on your device, we have no technical means to access your recordings, transcripts, or notes. There's no backend, no account sync, no cloud — nothing leaves your computer.
What happens if there's a data breach?
There's nothing to breach. Since Confidant has no servers and stores no client data externally, there's no database for anyone to hack, subpoena, or leak. Your data only exists on your own device.
Why don't I need a BAA to use Confidant?
A Business Associate Agreement is required when a third party handles or has access to Protected Health Information on your behalf. Because Confidant processes everything locally on your computer and never transmits data to our servers, we never handle your clients' PHI — and therefore aren't a Business Associate under HIPAA. No BAA needed.
Are you sure I don't need a BAA?
Very sure. We retained lawyers so you don't have to. HIPAA requires a BAA when a third party accesses or handles your clients' protected health information. Confidant never does — not even a little. Everything happens on your device. We have no server receiving your data, no pipeline touching your sessions, and no technical ability to see anything you record or write. No access, no BAA. You have our word on it, and more importantly, our attorneys'.

Local AI

What does "local AI" mean?
Local AI means the models powering Confidant's transcription and note generation run directly on your computer — not on a remote server. When you record a session and generate notes, all of that processing happens on your device. No data is sent anywhere.
Do I need an internet connection to use Confidant?
No. Once installed, Confidant works completely offline. You can record, transcribe, and generate notes with no internet connection. A connection is only needed to download updates or access new AI models.
Is local AI as accurate as cloud-based AI?
Yes. Modern on-device AI models rival the accuracy of cloud-based alternatives — often matching them for conversational speech like therapy sessions. And unlike cloud AI, local AI doesn't quietly get worse over time as companies downgrade their models to cut costs.
Why is local AI better for the environment?
Cloud-based AI tools route your data through massive data centers that consume enormous amounts of energy — for every session, every therapist, every day. Confidant runs entirely on your computer, so no server infrastructure spins up to process your work. Your sessions don't cost the planet anything extra.

Pricing & Billing

What's included in the one-time purchase?
Everything: session recording, local AI transcription, SOAP and DAP note generation, custom note prompts, unlimited sessions, and full offline capability. Your software keeps working forever — no subscription required.
What happens if I don't pay the annual maintenance fee?
Nothing bad. Your software keeps working exactly as it did when you bought it. The optional $179/yr update plan gives you access to new AI models as they're released, plus app improvements and new features. It's about staying on the cutting edge, not keeping the lights on.
Who funds Confidant?
Nobody but us. Confidant is completely self-funded and bootstrapped — no venture capital, no outside investors. That means no pressure to monetize your data, no pivot toward subscriptions to satisfy a board, and no one else's agenda shaping what we build. Just two people building something they believe in.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — Confidant includes a 14-day free trial so you can make sure it fits your workflow before committing.
Do you offer refunds?
If Confidant isn't working for you within 14 days of purchase, reach out and we'll make it right.

Notes & Workflow

What note formats does Confidant support?
Confidant currently supports SOAP and DAP notes, with more formats on the way. You can also customize your notes using your own prompts to match your practice's documentation standards.
Can I customize the note style?
Yes. Confidant lets you tailor note output with custom prompts, so the generated notes match your preferred format and terminology. You can also paste an example of one of your own notes in the Notes section of Settings — Confidant will do its best to match your voice and style. Just keep in mind that the more detailed your instructions, the longer it may take to generate a note.
Can I export notes to my EHR?
Yes — you can export your notes at any time and bring them into your EHR. Confidant doesn't lock your data in.
What's the difference between the Pro and Lite models?
There is only one Confidant — the model it downloads is simply what we've determined is the best fit for your computer's specs, and there is no price difference between them. If your computer has 16GB of RAM, Confidant will download the Pro model, which generates a complete note in up to one minute. If your machine has 8GB of RAM, it will download the Lite model, which is optimized for machines with less available memory and takes closer to four minutes to generate a note, with output that's slightly less detailed. If you upgrade to a newer computer and install Confidant on it, it will automatically download the Pro model. Both models run fully on-device and never send data anywhere.
What if I don't have time to generate a note right after a session?
No problem. Confidant includes batch note generation — if you record sessions throughout the day without stopping to generate notes, you can generate them all at once later with a single click, or generate them individually whenever it's convenient. Your recordings stay on your device until you're ready to generate notes.

System Requirements

What do I need to run Confidant?
Confidant is currently available for Mac, with Windows coming soon. On Mac, you'll need macOS 13 (Ventura) or later with an Apple Silicon chip (M1 or newer). Apple Silicon is what makes fast, accurate on-device AI possible.
Does it work on Intel Macs?
Not currently. The local AI models are optimized for Apple Silicon, which provides the processing power needed for fast, accurate transcription and note generation.
Will this work on a MacBook Neo?
Not currently. While we love to see Apple pushing the hardware forward, the MacBook Neo isn't able to meet the processing demands required to run Confidant's on-device AI models at the speed and accuracy our users expect. We recommend an M1 or newer Mac.
How much RAM do I need?
Confidant Lite requires a minimum of 8GB of RAM. Confidant Pro requires 16GB. We recommend 16GB for the best experience.
Is there an iPad or iPhone version?
Not at this time. Confidant is currently available for Mac, with Windows coming soon.
